Newborn F.A.Q

When should I book my Maternity & Newborn session?

I suggest booking your newborn session in your second trimester. This ensures there is plenty of time to plan your maternity & newborn session and you won’t miss out on a session regardless of if your baby arrives early or late! I reserve newborn bookings on the babies due date& then we organise the official session within 2 weeks after bub’s arrival. I can only take a limited number of newborn bookings per month & I do book out a few months in advance so if you are interested in having me photograph your newborn, let me know as soon as your ready to make a booking.
Last minute enquiries are always welcome.

How much experience do you have working with Newborns?

I have been working with Newborns for over 5 years & have photographed over 50 newborn sessions.
Prior to starting my photography business, I worked in child care & early child hood education for 7 years where I gained a lot of experience working with babies & children. I am very confident with settling, wrapping & posing newborn babies, and I continue to invest my time into learning more from other professional photographers to ensure that I can provide a safe & professional service to my clients.

What should I bring to my Newborn session?

A newborn session can take anywhere from 2-4 hours. So you should prepare yourself to be out of the house for a while & bring anything you would usually bring for baby when leaving the house; nappy bag with nappies, change of clothes, blanket, wipes, bottles, formula (if not breastfed) & a dummy to help with settling the baby.
For yourself, I recommend bringing a spare change of clothes, just in case your little one decides to wee or poo during their parent & family photos!

What should I wear to my Maternity & Newborn session?

Here at Sara Rendell Photography, I aim to provide a professional service that makes your experience with me as relaxed & stress free as possible. This is why I stock a full range of Maternity gowns in my studio for my clients to wear during their sessions. I understand that during pregnancy, it can be very difficult to shop for flattering outfits to wear for your session. So I have taken the pressure off you with providing the perfect solution! If you book your Maternity & Newborn session with me you will have full access to a range of stunning Maternity gowns to choose from. My gowns are of the highest quality Australian supplier & are made from beautiful stretch materials, guaranteed to be flattering on all body types!

For family & couple photos in the studio, I recommend that everyone wears light, neutral colours with no patterns or logos visible on their clothing. A neat casual dress code is a good guideline when planning your families outfits. For example; white or grey collared shirts or t shirts for little boys, cream or white dresses for little girls & a nice shirt or t shirt for dad.
You will receive more information about styling for your session when you book in- this is all included in your session preparation guide.

What happens if we can’t get the shots I wanted or if my baby doesn’t sleep?

I allow 2-4 hours for my studio newborn sessions.
This time frame allows plenty of time to feed, change, wrap & settle your little one as many times as they may need.
I keep my studio nice & warm so the babies are comfortable to sleep undressed, which helps them settle into a nice deep sleep.
Often babies will arrive asleep & remain asleep for another hour or more, which means the session moves very quickly & it is finished within the minimum 2 hour time frame.
Other times, babies arrive wide awake & just want to eat, poo, burp & snuggle for the first hour or more!
Thankfully I have many years of experience working with newborns, which has given me a great deal of patience & tolerance for normal newborn behaviour- feed, poo, wee, spew, fall asleep, wriggle, wake up, cry & repeat!
Although, it may be stressful for new parents who are worried about their baby not sleeping- I will happily snuggle & rock your baby off to sleep for as long as it takes while you relax in my comfortable home studio.
Your babies comfort, safety & happiness is ALWAYS my priority over my photos.

Sometimes things don’t always go to plan when working with babies & children and we don’t achieve what we had planned for a newborn session.
When this happens, I will do my best to accommodate the families needs & offer an additional session to try again.

How long will the newborn session take?

I allow 2-4 hours for my studio newborn sessions.
This time frame allows plenty of time to feed, change, wrap & settle your little one as many times as they may need.

Can I include family photos & my other children in the newborn session?

The simple answer to this questions is YES YES & YES!
My absolute favourite part of a newborn sessions is capturing the love, connection & pure joy that a new baby brings to a family. Whether is first time parents doting over their tiny new baby or proud siblings holding their baby brother or sister- I want to capture that memory & cherish that moment in time for you. Your baby will never be this tiny again & you will forget so quickly how tiny they were ….. and one day you will look back at your newborn photos and wonder how did they ever fit in daddy’s hands?!
Young children, especially toddlers can become overwhelmed during their photography session & may not want to participate. This is totally normal, and I will always allow them to have a break & will attempt the photo again when they are ready.

Where is your studio located?

I work from a home studio in Thurgoona NSW.
Located in Corrys Wood Estate, my home is easily accessible from the Hume High way.
I have a dedicated studio space within my home that is spacious & comfortable. I aim to provide a clean, safe & welcoming environment for my clients & encourage everyone to make themselves at home while visiting my studio.

My clients have access to the bathroom & kitchen- microwave, kettle, fridge as needed.
Even though I work from home, my family will not be present at any stage during a photo shoot.
My address will be provided to clients prior to their session.
